Egypt kills 30 ‘highly dangerous’ militants in Sinai

The Egyptian army said it killed 30 militants over four days in land and air raids on the famous Sinai peninsula.

The army said Friday in a statement that 30 "highly dangerous" militants had been killed and five others were arrested in operations in North Sinai province.

The army, however, did not explain to which group the militants belonged.

Earlier this month, Egypt was hit by one of the worst attacks on its security forces over the years. At least 23 soldiers were killed and 26 others wounded in two bombings claimed by terrorist group Takfiri Daesh, who targeted security checkpoints south of the northern Sinai town of Rafah on 7 July.

The Sinai Peninsula has been in a state of emergency since October 2014, after a fatal terrorist attack that left 33 Egyptian soldiers dead.
